Roman de Gare

IMDB: Roman de Gare

An examination of perceptions and expectations, with some mystery thrown in. Enjoyable enough, but I thought it tried a little too hard to be clever in some spots. - T

An okay movie. It definitely tried too to obfuscate in an academic kind of way. - A

Mamma Mia!

IMDB: Mamma Mia! - the sing along version
Source: Cinema with Rich and Lucy
Date viewed: October 3, 2008

Mamma Mia is right! Or, perhaps I should say, Madre de Dios! This was quite a production. I ended up going to the sing-along version of this film, which, until I got to the theater, I didn't know existed. What characterizes the sing-along version of the film, you ask? Well, I'll tell you. During every song, the lyrics appear on the screen and change color syllable by syllable so the viewers can - you guessed it - sing along. Based on the amount of audience participation I could hear, I think many others were as surprised as I was about seeing the sing-along version. Many, but not all. There was a very cute young lady sitting behind us who knew the words to every song, sang along when no one else did, and had some cool dance moves to boot. Some of the movie was fun. Most of it was excruciating, and this from a solid gold ABBA fan. - A

Off the chain! Well, surprisingly funny, in any case. Timothy Dalton was excellent. - A

This really was surprisingly funny. And surprisingly odd and disturbing. The final half-hour (minus the last couple minutes) is quite nice. It's by the same people that did Shaun of the Dead, but this one is ten times better. - T

This Film is Not Yet Rated

An interesting documentary about the MPAA film rating system. If accurate, and there's no reason to believe it's not, the system is flawed and skewed, but I bet most of you knew that already. - A

As a movie, it is mildly entertaining. As a commentary, it is disturbing. But really, I doubt that restructuring or reforming the ratings system would suddenly open up the doors for a whole slew of great movies. Hollywood is a wretched hive of scum and villainy, but I bet most of you knew that already. - T
