An Inconvenient Truth

See this movie.

I think frequently of something I heard Gore Vidal say on NPR's "Science Friday" back, maybe, ten or fifteen years ago – "The human race is a parasite which is attacking its host." This movie, the work of another Gore, lays out the gory details of the current state of that battle. In short, we're winning. Al Gore was the first person I ever voted for, in the 1988 primaries, from college, with an absentee ballot, and I've never been more proud of that youthful decision. - T

The movie was well put together and compelling. Humans will suffer from the effects of global warming. The Earth itself will just spin on until the sun goes out. - A

I found the movie riveting from the very beginning, but in the end I was left strangely unsatisfied. - T

Interesting, but problematic. - A

Inside Man

Not exactly what you expect from a movie about a bank robbery. Jodie Foster looked awkward in her spike heels, which should have been a clue - I won't say to what. Clive Owen looked comfortable in his role. All in all, a very good cast. The characters are good, but the story is weak, especially the ending. - A

This was much, much better than "Flight Plan," but I suppose you know that that tells you nothing about whether or not this movie was any good... Well, it was good. I didn't think that the ending was particularly weak, but then, I'm much more willing to suspend disbelief than is my counterpart across the aisle. It was an enjoyable film, but I feel I have to add that "Flight Plan" had one advantage - the fact that Jodie was on screen over 90% of the time, whereas in this one, her screen time was minimal. (And by the way, I refuse to entertain any theories regarding "screen time:quality of movie" ratios.) - T

X-Men: The Last Stand

Date viewed: May 27, 2006 - Opening night!

While I don't have a mutant power myself (see below), I do have a
boyfriend who looks surprisingly like Wolverine when you're sitting next
to him in a darkened theater watching X-Men 3. So believe me when I tell
you that the story line wasn't perfect (I could have suggested a few
improvements, if anyone had thought to ask), and some of the dialog was
lame, but the mutants and their powers are still kind of neat. Who
thinks up all of these special powers? Someone with a special ability,
I'm sure. I have tried to come up with one of my own. One possibility is
Regurgito, where my ability is to render my enemies powerless by making
them throw up uncontrollably. What do you think? - A

Actually, I think I look more like Kelsey Grammar's character, whatever he was called. (And what was his power, anyway?) This movie was, in the end, poor. I think that the lead female super-mutant was somewhat wasted. It's a super-hero movie, you might as well be pure evil or pure good. Giving her the inner struggle, without even letting her realize it, didn't work. Still, I'll probably go to see X-Men IV on opening night, too. - T

Andie MacDowell can't act. Fortunately, she isn't in all that many scenes, so she doesn't ruin the movie entirely. Hugh Grant and the rest of the cast are fun to watch. - A

Andie MacDowell can't act. I'm not sure why we borrowed this to watch again, but it had its moments, I suppose. - T
